Why We Chose the Name KALBAS
At the heart of everything we do at KALBAS Charitable Foundation is the desire to create lasting impact. When we set out to name our foundation, we wanted something that would embody not just who we are, but also what we stand for. That’s why we chose KALBAS.
What is Kalbas?
In Antillean Creole, kalbas refers to the calabash tree (Crescentia cujete), which holds the honored title of being the national tree of St. Lucia. This remarkable plant is more than just a tree—it is a symbol of resilience, versatility, and sustainability. From its gourd-like fruit, locals craft everything from jewelry to utensils, tupperware, purses, and decorative art. The calabash is a tree that gives endlessly, meeting the needs of the community in practical and creative ways.
Why Kalbas?
For us, the calabash is a perfect metaphor for our mission. At KALBAS, we strive to be like this tree—a resource for communities in need, meeting challenges with solutions that are practical, innovative, and sustainable.
The calabash tree is deeply rooted in St. Lucia’s culture and heritage, just as we are. As an organization founded by individuals with a deep love for the island and its people, we honor that connection by drawing inspiration from this versatile and life-giving tree.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability is more than a buzzword for us—it is a guiding principle. Just as the calabash tree provides tools that endure, we aim to create programs and solutions that stand the test of time. Whether we’re supplying school libraries with books, helping families achieve food security, or providing health resources, we work to ensure that our impact is long-lasting and self-sustaining.
We believe in giving a hand up, not just a handout. By involving local volunteers and fostering a spirit of community-led initiatives, we encourage locals to help one another, building resilience and pride from within.
